Apple is rumored to be working on a new display that incorporates a custom Apple silicon chip, similar to the A13-powered Studio Display. This new display is expected to have independent functionality from the connected Mac, potentially acting as a smart display even when not in use. Mark Gurman, in his Power On newsletter on Bloomberg, shared this information.
Speculations about Apple\’s display plans have been circulating for some time. It is possible that the company is developing a 27-inch mini-LED display and a successor to the high-end Apple Pro Display XDR. These displays might have built-in Siri capabilities, enabling users to summon the virtual assistant directly from the displays themselves.

The newly mentioned smart display capability bears similarities to the StandBy feature expected to be introduced in iOS 17 later this year. StandBy allows iPhones to function as smart displays when connected to power and positioned horizontally. This feature resembles an alarm clock, automatically dimming the screen to a soft red hue at night for sleep-friendly usage. It also provides glanceable widgets and convenient control of smart home devices directly from the StandBy screen.
Interestingly, a similar feature was initially rumored for the iPad in late 2022, but it was not announced for the tablets during WWDC 2023. Whether this feature will be introduced in future versions of iPadOS 17 remains uncertain and awaits further confirmation from Apple.
